Tuition school grants

The federal government, state and municipal governments, private corporations and organizations, universities and colleges, and private employers all give tuition school grants. Some grants are based on financial needs and others are based on merits.  The federal government is the largest provider of grants for student tuition. Grants are given to a wide range of students from different social, ethnic and economic backgrounds.  Tuition school grants are free. They do not need to be paid back like student loans. Grant awards range from $500 up to approximately $5,000. College students, persons who have been displaced from their jobs, single mothers, disabled persons, veterans, minorities, women, and other categories of persons may find tuition grants to help pay for their schooling, books, living expenses and related school expenses.

Locating Tuition Grants

Students can apply for the FAFSA Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by going to the government’s website http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.  States also offer tuition grants. Corporate donors and other organizations offer grants and eligibility requirements vary.  Students should check with their financial aid office to find out about available tuition grants for students or follow the links on the school’s website to the various State, private, and grants available from their own college or university.  Corporations and organizations also post their grants on their own websites. Students should pay attention to expiration deadlines.

Eligibility Requirements for Student Tuition Grants

Tuition grants are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Each grant has its own requirements. Students should review the requirements carefully to make sure they are eligible for the grant before they apply. Financial document such as a tax return or a parent’s tax return may need to be supplied with the application.  It is also a good idea for students to apply to as many grants and scholarships as possible and to apply early. There is a lot of competition for tuition grants and resources are limited in many cases, especially federal grants.

Federal grants require that students be U.S. citizens or meet permanent residency status. A valid social security card and high school diploma or GED are also required. Male students 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service. Students must be current on any grants or student loans. The funds can only be used for school related purposes. Students must maintain a satisfactory academic record while receiving grants and demonstrate a financial need. Students should check with their school regarding FAFSA deadlines and any other school requirements that need to be met.

Federal Pell Grants are the most popular grants that help students pay for their college tuition.

Other government tuition grants available include the Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grants, the  Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grants, Academic Competitiveness Grants, Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants.

Grants are a great way for students who demonstrate financial need to obtain a college degree without having to repay the money when they graduate.  Tuition school grants give a diverse group of students the opportunity to attend college in order to attain the education they need to compete in today’s business and economic climate.
